Saint Paul, Minnesota – House Majority Leader Erin Murphy released this statement following the historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act – the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage in states – is unconstitutional.
“When two people fall in love and decide to get married we should not only celebrate, but honor their deep commitment to each other with the full protection of the law. Today, there is cause for celebration.
The United States Supreme Court has joined states like ours in Minnesota in recognizing that each couple who decides to marry deserves dignity, respect and equal rights – regardless of sexual orientation.
Every year, every month and every week we continue our unyielding journey toward freedom and equality for all. And today, with a bounce in our step, we took a long stride forward.”
