New Year Update

Monday, January 6, 2014

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Over the holidays our family played pond hockey, and Jason’s high school friends had their 8th annual cookie decorating/ugly sweater contest. They are now young adult men. Pretty cool!

TRUCK WEIGHT COMPLIANCE TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE IN NW MINN.

Folks in the transportation industry can attend a free truck weight compliance class to stay up-to-date on the technical criteria of state truck weight laws. The class teaches efficiency: how to buy the right truck in order to haul the most legal weight, and I highly recommend this training for anyone in the industry.

WHAT: Truck Weight Education Program compliance training (free of charge)

WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Polk County Human Services Center (1424 Central Ave. N.E., East Grand Forks, Minn. 56721)

WHO: Presented by Alexandria Technical and Community College

Additional information and online registration is available here. For questions regarding course content, contact instructor Greg Hayes at 218-684-1764 or GAHayes@gmail.com.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

I’ll be back in St. Paul at the end of the month for two meetings that were called by chairs of the Environment and Natural Resources Policy committee and Environment, Natural Resources and Ag Finance committee.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the policy committee will hold an informational hearing on wolf management by the State of Minnesota. The public is welcome to testify for or against the wolf hunting season that began last year. Learn more here.

On the same day, the finance committee will discuss the viability of “Roundup ready resistance” crops. It is my hope that this is not the beginning of an assault on the agriculture community. Meetings over the last year indicate that metro legislators do not trust the responsible practices of farmers in rural Minnesota.

AROUND THE DISTRICT

I enjoyed the opportunity to visit with hockey legend Henry Boucha at the Bantam hockey tournament in Roseau. Henry recently wrote an autobiography. You can visit his website at henryboucha.com.

Congrats to T.J. Oshie and Gigi Marvin, both of Warroad, for being selected to play on the US Olympic Hockey teams! Northwest Minnesota is proud of you! Fun fact: They were part of the same graduating class at Warroad High in 2005. Learn more about the US Olympic Hockey teams at www.olympics.usahockey.com.

I’m going to be scheduling town halls in the upcoming weeks. Please contact me if you’d like me to visit your community!
