HOUSE REPUBLICAN ASSISTANT LEADER’S STATEMENT ON PERSONAL CARE ATTENDANT LAWSUIT

ST. PAUL – Rep. Tara Mack, R-Apple Valley, released the following statement in response to Minnesota personal care attendants filing a lawsuit asking the court to halt an impending union election:

“We are glad to see Minnesota’s personal care attendants standing up to unlawful government interference in their efforts to provide care for loved ones,” said Rep. Tara Mack, R-Apple Valley. “The freedom of association is a cherished right in our country and we should not force a government union on anyone. For more than a year, my colleagues have raised concerns about the legality of diverting money intended for the care of Minnesota’s vulnerable and elderly populations.”

“Last month, the United States Supreme Court removed the threat of compulsory dues for those who don't want to join the union. We hope this case will prove once and for all that Democrats in the Legislature overreached by inserting themselves into decisions between personal care attendants and families of disabled loved ones.”

The lawsuit was filed in response to the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services’ recent order for a public sector union election. This development follows the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision in Illinois’ Harris v. Quinn case that people who are not government employees cannot be compelled to pay government union dues.
