STATEMENT ON PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT UNION ELECTION

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

HOUSE REPUBLICAN ASSISTANT LEADER’S STATEMENT ON PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT UNION ELECTION

ST. PAUL - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced Tuesday they are delivering cards to the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services, triggering a union election to unionize personal care assistants (PCAs). This news comes just one week after the United States Supreme Court decision in Illinois' Harris v. Quinn case that people who are not government employees, like Pam Harris who cares for her disabled son, cannot be compelled to pay government union dues. House Republican Assistant Leader Tara Mack (Apple Valley) gave the following statement in response.

"People have the right to free association, but the state should not force citizens to join a union and give up money intended for care of their loved ones," said Rep. Tara Mack, R-Apple Valley. "We owe a debt of gratitude to Minnesotans who dedicate their lives to caring for the most vulnerable among us. Gov. Mark Dayton and Democrats in control of the state Legislature should follow the United States Supreme Court decision, which makes it clear that the state cannot force people who are not state employees to pay dues to a government union."
