Legislative Update

Friday, May 2, 2014

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update from the Capitol.

Military Reciprocity Bill

On Tuesday, the House unanimously passed a bill to make it easier for veterans to join law enforcement.

House File 1915 states that if a person has four years of military law enforcement service, he or she can count that experience when taking peace officer education examinations. This bill has the potential to help many veterans who come home after deployment find a job, and makes it easier for law enforcement to recruit these talented veterans.

Veterans do a wonderful job protecting our nation, and now with this legislation, it will be easier for them to find a career protecting our communities too.

Thank You Teachers

This week, we celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Day so please take time to thank all the teachers in your life!

I chose a career in teaching and know how many talented people are out there dedicating themselves to preparing children for the future. A great teacher can spark interest in a subject, help kids look at the world differently and foster a love of lifelong learning.

So once again, thank you to all the great teachers out there! You make our community better and deserve recognition.

Recognizing Education in Our District

This week, I was honored to present House resolutions to outstanding educators in our district.

First, on Thursday, Lakes International Language Academy won the Minnesota Department of Education’s Finance Award for the eighth time. They had a neat ceremony in the Capitol, and I was able to present them with a resolution recognizing their outstanding achievements.

On Friday, Forest Lake High School had an open tour of their first-rate Agriculture Department, and I was able to see their outstanding facilities firsthand.

I also presented a House resolution to Mike Miron for winning Region Three Teacher of the Year. He does an outstanding job leading FFA and teaching Ag classes at Forest Lake and is very deserving of this recognition.

There are so many wonderful educators and schools in our community!

Student Visit

It was great to meet with fourth grade students this week from St. Peter’s Catholic School. I hope they enjoyed their visit to our State Capitol!

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative.

Sincerely,

Bob
