Legislative Update

Friday, May 16, 2014

Dear Neighbors,

On May 9th, Governor Dayton signed a bill I authored into law that renames part of U.S. Highway 8 between Chisago and Center City “Nicholas Patrick Spehar Memorial Highway.” It has been an honor to carry legislation honoring a fallen hero, and I am glad to see this highway renamed in his honor.

Nick Spehar grew up in Chisago City and joined the Navy in 2007. He excelled and soon became a Navy Seal—a member of the elite Seal Team 5.

In August of 2011, a helicopter carrying 30 US Service personnel was shot down in Afghanistan.  Two Minnesotans were on the helicopter.  John Faas of Minneapolis and Nick Spehar of Chisago Lakes.  Both died as heroes protecting our nation.

Spehar’s decorations include Army Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Rifle Marksmanship Medal and the Pistol Marksmanship Medal.

Spehar’s dedication and sacrifice has moved the hearts of many in our community. For the family, friends and fellow Minnesotans who were touched by his life, I am glad we can honor his sacrifice in this small way.

It’s an honor to represent you at the Capitol. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever be assistance to you on a matter of state government.

Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Bob
