New lottery info; deer management mtg scheduled

Friday, March 21, 2014

Dear Neighbor,

Here are a couple of jottings as we bring to a close Week 4 of the 2014 legislative session:

LOTTERY SETS ANOTHER RECORD

The Minnesota State Lottery had $560 million in statewide sales last year, gaining $135 million in revenue for the state General Fund, Environmental Resources Trust Fund and more.

This is the sixth-straight year the lottery has set a sales record. It is intriguing that lottery sales continued to increase even as the country suffered through the Great Recession during that span.

As for our part of the state, retailers throughout District 8A generated $5.5 million in lottery sales last year, with more than $4 million in scratch games and $1.4 million in lottery games. In all, 46 businesses in District 8A served as lottery retailers in 2013, earning $329,555 in commissions and incentives. Those sales resulted in estimated contributions $727,637 to the General Fund, $335,327 to the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $128671 to each the Game and Fish Fund and the Natural Resources Fund.

The $560 million in statewide sales resulted in $75 million for the General Fund, $34 million for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, and $13 million for both the Natural Resources Fund and the Game and Fish Fund.

More information regarding how lottery revenue is appropriated can be found by logging on to www.mnlottery.com and selecting the “Where the Money Goes” dropdown under the “News and Info” tab.
