Legislative Update

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Dear Neighbors,

This past Wednesday, a bipartisan bill I authored to make it easier for Minnesota’s farmers’ markets to operate passed in the House of Representatives by a 129-0 vote. The issue was first brought to me by the local Chisago City Farmers’ Market as well as the Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association, and expands the ability of farmers’ markets to do business in Minnesota.

The legislation authorizes farmers’ market vendors to perform food sampling and demonstrations, which prior to this legislation had to operate under a jumble of state statutes enforced by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Department of Health.

I have worked with several groups on this bill since 2013 and have support from the Minnesota Farmers’ Union, the city of Minneapolis, the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture.

In addition to clarifying standards for farmers’ markets, the bill also includes a provision allowing for important community chili cook-off events to occur more easily within Department of Health guidelines.

Our Chisago Farmers’ Market opens on Friday evenings and is a great stop for many people beginning their weekend plans. Having fresh, local produce available is good for both our farmers and consumers, and I am glad this legislation has garnered such strong support. It will have a positive impact on farmers’ markets across the state, removing unnecessary and burdensome regulations.

This bill passed unanimously out of both the Senate (55-0) and Minnesota House (129-0), and Governor Dayton signed the bill into law.
