House DFL Bonding Bill Invests in Mill Towns Trail

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN – This week, the Minnesota House of Representatives Capital Investment Committee unveiled a bonding proposal designed to create jobs by investing in public works projects across Minnesota.

The $800 million proposal directs funds toward the construction of the Mill Towns Trail. Up to $600,000 would go towards building the trail segment between Dundas and Northfield as well as the segment between Lake Byllesby and the Cannon Valley Trail.

“People living in our region care deeply about the Mill Towns Trail,” said Rep. Bly. “It is a true gem for Northfield and our surrounding communities. I’m glad this project is included in our bonding proposal.”

The construction of the trail was designated by the Legislature in 2000 as a recreational trail extending in to Faribault from the connection with Sakatah Singing Hills Trail to the cities of Dundas and Northfield. When complete, the Mill Towns Trail will create a state recreational trail system from Mankato to Red Wing.

“This project not only puts people back to work, it also keeps the trail on the path to completion so more individuals and families can enjoy our region’s scenery and history. It’s a recreational and tourism investment that improves our arts and entertainment sectors, contributes to Northfield’s image as a destination, and grows our local economy. In my mind, that’s money well spent.”

The proposed bonding bill awaits a vote in the House Capital Investment Committee.
