Fantastic get-together at Glacial Lakes

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Dear Neighbor,

My wife, Faith, and I attended a unique gathering at the Glacial Lakes State Park, located about five miles south of Starbuck, on Saturday. A local group of park enthusiasts known as the “Friends of Glacial Lakes State Park” hosted a winter get-together complete with nighttime cross-country skiing, hiking and snowshoeing, along with good conversation around a roaring campfire.

A lot of work went into planning and pulling off the event. As one drove into the park that evening, lighted luminaries along the roadside showed the way. The trails were also marked with these same luminaries, made from partially frozen five-gallon pails of water tipped upside down with lights inside. What was especially great to see was the number of families in attendance. Even though the evening was cool, with a northwest breeze making things brisk, young kids with big smiles and rosy cheeks came back to the shelter with their parents after being on the trails, ready for hot chocolate and s’mores.

Estimates of up to several hundred took part the event, with ski teams from several schools around the state in attendance. One comment I heard several times during the evening was the wish that the trails could be groomed more often. With the purchase of trail passes supplying the funding for grooming trails, not enough revenue is being taken in to groom on a more regular basis. But some said it was a dis-incentive to go on the trails (and purchase a trail pass) because they were not being kept up. Kind of a Catch-22.

Sincerely,
