I wanted to pass along some information from the Minnesota Department of Commerce. With all the snow from this past winter beginning to melt, the Commerce Department is urging Minnesotans to review their flood insurance needs. Because flood damage is not covered under a standard homeowner's policy, the Commerce Department recommends reviewing flood maps to determine whether or not flood insurance would be a good investment.
I want to make sure that Minnesotans know that there is a limited time to review updated flood maps to assess whether to purchase flood insurance. Homeowners should act quickly – flood insurance takes 30 days to go into effect.
Each homeowner's situation is different, but I would urge you to take a moment, read the Department of Commerce news release so you can take precautions if it makes sense for your home.
Republicans look to prioritize 5% Campaign
This week, Republicans tried to put politics aside and prioritize a widely-supported bill that would give a 5% increase to home care workers who care for some of our most vulnerable Minnesota citizens. This increase is long overdue, and a sensible, bipartisan proposal with over 70 co-authors.
Despite raising $2.1 billion in new taxes last session, Democrats failed to provide this minuscule amount of funding that would help improve care for elderly and disabled Minnesotans.
Democrats apparently don't see this as a priority. Despite joining all Republicans to vote 120-10 to bring the bill to the General Register (a necessary step before a bill can be brought to the floor) earlier this week, they voted down efforts in the Rules Committee and on the floor to take politics out of this sensitive and important issue, and pass a clean bill without games or gimmicks.
The Five Percent campaign is an effort that has wide bipartisan support. We could pass this bill with super-majority, if not unanimous support today. Yet Democrats continue to put politics before people, refusing to expedite this bill because they want to use it as a bargaining chip for their own political gain.
Republicans know that this is a priority for Minnesotans. It's unfortunate that Democrats are too busy looking out for themselves rather than the best interests of Minnesota.
