Merry Christmas; legislative update

Friday, December 20, 2013

Dear Neighbor,

The 2014 session begins February 25 and the Legislature will begin ramping up in earnest after the holiday season. For now, here is an update on some items that have made recent news:

MNSURE STILL FALTERING

It has been nearly three months since MNsure – the state’s version of Obamacare – was launched, and problems persist. The media continues reporting on flaws with the enrollment process and, to date, zero insurance cards have been issued. The MNsure director resigned this week and there still seem to be more questions than answers with this program.

Concerns we expressed regarding high policy costs, a lack of patient choices and insecure citizen data remain problematic. Time is running out to enroll and ensure coverage on January 1 and there is growing anxiety among citizens and agents alike.

ECONOMIC UPDATE

We recently received good news that our string of positive economic forecasts has been extended. The state posted positive reports two consecutive years since the Republican-led biennial budget went into place in 2011. The books closed on that budget June 30, having exceeded revenue projections by a combined $3.5 billion over that span. The latest budget forecast calls for $1.1 billion in surplus revenue in 2014-15 and a $2.2 billion surplus in 2016-17.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

The Mack family wishes you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I will keep you updated as the issues take shape leading up to the new session. In addition, your input and feedback is welcome on the issues facing our state as we move forward. In the meantime, I hope you are able to spend time enjoying the company of friends and loved ones this holiday season.

Once again, from my home to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
