ST. PAUL, MN – This week, the Minnesota legislature will be hearing a variety of bills to address gun violence. Proposals vary from arming teachers at schools to limiting large capacity ammunition clips and imposing mandatory background checks. House Public Safety Committee Vice-Chair Paul Rosenthal (DFL-Edina) has introduced legislation to address how and when convicted criminals who have had their firearms eligibility revoked can again become eligible to handle guns.
Rep. Rosenthal’s bill would impose a five year waiting period before convicted criminals not allowed to handle guns are able to apply for firearms eligibility and notify the prosecutor and law enforcement. This will set a structural precedent for how these criminals can regain their firearms eligibility and for how long they must wait after conviction.

“This is a common sense approach to helping local law enforcement combat gun violence. We are creating a framework for individuals who have lost their right to handle a gun to legally work towards firearm eligibility. Streamlining the system will help to keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals and keep our communities safe.”
