Giving Thanks for those who Give Selflessly

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

This Thanksgiving I invite you to join me in thanking the area residents and organizations devoted to giving back to our community without expecting anything in return. These are the folks who give charitably not only during the holiday season, but the whole year long—without government prodding, aid or involvement. They embody the essence of the American spirit which makes our country exceptional.

We are fortunate in Rogers, Dayton and Maple Grove to have a vibrant community with many service organizations. It is because of the efforts made by these groups that the northwest suburbs are a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.

During this time of thanksgiving, I extend an invitation to readers to become active in one or more of our many community organizations. You will find that service involvement is not only beneficial to those you serve, but it also provides great networking and personal development opportunities.

I’ve provided a list of resources below to help you get a start on exploring different community engagement opportunities. Remember, it all starts at the local level, and together we can make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Service Organizations

The Lions Club serves to “not only help those in need, but have opportunities to develop personal friendships and gain valuable leadership skills.” Rogers (rogersmnlions.org), Dayton (DaytonMNLions.org) and Maple Grove (www.maplegrovelions.org) have active chapters. As you may know, the Rogers Club is responsible for hosting Rockin’ Rogers Days each June; the Maple Grove Lions have annual pancake and waffle breakfasts and serve sweet corn at Maple Grove Days; and the Dayton Lions contribute thousands in scholarship dollars every year to qualifying students.

Rotary Clubs strive to “bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.” Active chapters are located in Rogers (rogersrotary.com) and Maple Grove (www.clubrunner.ca/maplegrove).

The Maple Grove Women of Today (maplegrovewot.tripod.com) also give their time and energy helping others, with a focus on “community service, personal growth and fellowship.”

Maple Grove is fortunate to have an active community group that serves to “promote city heritage and foster community pride.” The Maple Grove Community Organization (www.mgco.org) sponsors Maple Grove Days and other family fun events throughout the year.

Countless service opportunities exist in Rogers, Dayton and Maple Grove, and each of the organizations listed here welcome new members at any time. It’s never too late to volunteer, become involved, meet new people and make a difference.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any questions about local organizations or state government related issues. My door is always open to the people and priorities of the northwest suburbs!
