Dayton, Democrats' Reckless Implementation of ObamaCare Leaves Minnesotans Scrambling

Thursday, November 7, 2013

St. Paul – Rep. Peggy Scott (R-Andover) and Rep. Mary Liz Holberg (R-Lakeville) released the following statement regarding the Legislative Auditor’s report on MNsure’s unauthorized disclosure of thousands of Minnesotan’s private data.

“Governor Dayton and Democrats’ reckless implementation of ObamaCare has left hardworking Minnesotans scrambling before the end of the year. The findings outlined in today’s report from the legislative auditor demonstrate another serious fumble for MNsure. The data breach that exposed thousands of Minnesotans’ personal information back in September wasn’t merely an isolated incident relegated to a single employee, but a top to bottom failure to adequately train employees and failure to install proper safeguards on the part of MNsure,” said Rep. Scott. “Even more disturbing is that this careless conduct with the personal information of Minnesotans continues at MNsure in violation of state privacy laws.”

Republicans have repeatedly warned Governor Dayton and MNsure officials that they are not following state privacy and security laws.

“After reviewing the auditor’s special report, my concerns regarding the policies at MNsure have devolved into a total lack of confidence in Democrats’ ability to implement this system with any respect for people’s privacy. MNsure is embarking on possibly the largest grab of individuals’ private health and financial data without adequate training and security controls. This is another unfortunate chapter in the Dayton administration’s complete disregard for the privacy of personal information. It’s time for this trend of data breaches to end. MNsure was given more than $150 million to build a system from scratch. There is no excuse for a brand new system to lack even the most rudimentary security controls and privacy protections,” said Rep. Holberg.

Rep. Scott and Rep. Holberg both serve on the House Subcommittee on Data Practices.
