REP. GENE PELOWSKI: MINNESOTA STATUTE 12A IMPROVES STATE DISASTER RECOVERY PROCESS AND DISASTER RELIEF PACKAGE

ST. PAUL, MN - Today, the Minnesota Legislature approved a $180 million disaster relief package for recovery efforts due to devastating floods in Northeastern Minnesota and severe windstorms and storms in Western and South Central Minnesota. Using the model legal framework outlined in Minnesota Statutes Chapter 12A, the state’s recovery process was clearly more efficient than in previous disasters. The disaster relief package passed on a bipartisan vote of 125 to 3.

State Representative Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona) issued the following statement:

“Today, we saw how lessons learned from the 2007 Southeast Minnesota floods were used to craft a better relief package for the current disaster. Since 2008, Chapter 12A has been the playbook for the way Minnesota can coordinate its resources effectively in what can be a very chaotic situation. Chapter 12A lays out specific responsibilities for thirteen state agencies traditionally involved in disaster response operations.

Government at its best can be used to improve people’s lives and address concerns that only the resources of an entire state are capable of doing. Chapter 12A was created through the actions of public hearings with bipartisan support to ensure that when disasters strike, Minnesota can be prepared to do its very best to help those in need.

It is fitting that the State Legislature came together in a strong bipartisan fashion to continue the Minnesota tradition of aiding our neighbors in need when catastrophe hits.”

Governor Dayton is expected to promptly sign the bill into law.
