ST. PAUL, MN – Today, the Disaster Relief Working Group held a second meeting at the State Capitol to address state funding for late June flooding in Northeastern Minnesota and windstorms and storms in western and south central Minnesota. Various state agency officials, using the model legal framework outlined in Minnesota Statutes Chapter 12A, presented funding requests based on damage assessments. State Representative Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona) participated in the Working Group meeting.
“After the 2007 Southeast Minnesota flood, I took on the task of drafting model legislation to be used as framework on how to handle future natural disasters so the state’s recovery process would be more efficient and consistent,” stated Rep. Pelowski. “Chapter 12A outlines the respective responsibilities of the thirteen state agencies traditionally involved in disaster response operations. Today, officials from those state agencies made specific funding requests following the next steps in process of Chapter 12A.”
A one-day Special Session is expected to be called on August 24th by Governor Dayton to approve the disaster relief package. House and Senate committee hearings are expected to be held on the proposal and allow for public testimony.
“It is essential that meetings are open to the public and information is readily available,” said Pelowski. “As chief author of the 2007 Disaster Recovery bill, I presented legislation in several committees before it was taken up on the House floor. We heard and received valuable testimony that made for a better relief package. It would be a mistake not to give the public that opportunity with this relief package.”
