Rep. Persell: Today’s Hearing an Important First Step

ST. PAUL, MN. – Today, state legislator’s held their first hearing to address disaster relief, resulting from last month’s storms and flooding that wreaked havoc on communities in Northern Minnesota. Legislator’s used this hearing as a means to gather information in order to develop a comprehensive relief package for communities afflicted by the storms.

The committee overviewed the Legislative Auditor’s March 8, 2012 “Helping Communities Recover from Natural Disasters” report, using it as a guide in determining the best course of action in developing a disaster relief bill. A key finding of the report is that local governments, residents and businesses dealing with the aftermath of a disaster need more help in navigating the complex procedures used to apply for and receive recovery assistance.

Additionally, Kris Eide, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, presented Governor Dayton’s proposal that would provide $189 million in relief, which is similar to recent disaster relief responses.

State Representative John Persell issued the following statement:

“Today’s hearing was an important first step in making sure the legislature works together in order to put together a storm relief package capable of helping our communities as a whole, as well as, individuals directly.

“With today’s hearing we were able to get some questions answered. Though, unsurprisingly, many questions still remain. It is my intent to continue working with local officials, my colleagues here at the legislature and Governor Dayton to make sure our community is taken care of as we move through this process.

“With so many in our community feeling the effects of those storms on their pocketbook, ensuring that the final disaster relief package helps us get back on out feet is my top priority.”
