My heart was heavy today when I heard John Williams had passed away. John devoted a great amount of time and effort to our Northside. He was a great football player, but more importantly, he was an outstanding person. He could have moved his dental office and his home to a wealthy suburb, but he chose to stay and help the people of the Northside.
John was head of the coalition of health providers serving our Northside. As a Board Member of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, he was a strong proponent of requiring the commission to hire people of color, and was supportive of all my efforts on minority hiring and contracting. Another interesting fact about John is that he was one of the top forensic dentists in the country, and served as an expert on murder cases and other complex investigations.
It seemed there was a special place in his heart for making sure that youth received a good upbringing so they could succeed in life. He was very interested in all my work on youth development and talked about all the support he had growing up.
John will be missed as a leader in our community. My condolences go out to his family.
