Today the Minnesota version of ObamaCare, known as MNsure, announced the rates for the health insurance plans that will be sold starting October 1st on the state-run website that is costing taxpayers more than $300 million dollars to create and implement.
Democrats are hailing the announcement as good news, claiming that Minnesota's rates are among the lowest in the nation for states who created their own insurance exchange marketplace.
What they're failing to tell you however is that hardworking Minnesotans will be paying more for insurance through MNsure than they could through the private insurance market. For instance, a 25 year old can get a private insurance plan for about $60/month through the private market. The MNsure rate is about $90/month.
We've seen sky-high insurance rates across the country, with rates in some states skyrocketing more than 100% under ObamaCare. It's hardly an accomplishment when Minnesota's rates are lower than the sky-high rates we're seeing around the nation in response to this boondoggle of a law.
Worse yet, residents in Southeast Minnesota will have fewer choices than the rest of the state. While here in Sibley County we'll have four health insurance companies to choose from on the exchange, residents of Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rice, Watonwan, and Martin counties will have just three, and the rest of Southeast Minnesota including the cities of Rochester, Winona, Albert Lea, and Austin will have just two health insurance providers to choose from.
What happens if your doctor isn't covered by either of the two companies? We were promised by the President that if we liked our health insurance, we could keep it. It's becoming increasingly clear, unfortunately, that it was an empty promise.
