Monday, August 5, 2013

Dear Neighbor,

Veterans in Stearns County may be eligible for storm assistance. They may receive up to $1,000 in reimbursements for damages caused by June 21 storms that hit Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has established an Emergency Storm Relief grant to cover out-of-pocket expenses for veterans and surviving spouses paying for cleanup and repairs due to wind and/or flooding damage.

Applications and copies of receipts must be dated in a time frame, as designated by the Commissioner of Veterans Affairs. MDVA will accept applications for reimbursement for expenditures dated no earlier than June 21, 2013 and no later than September 30, 2013. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2013.

Examples of reimbursable items include:

  • Building materials (storm/high-wind related)
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Food (maximum reimbursement $500 with receipts dated between June 21-28)
  • Rental costs (generators, water pumps, bobcats, backhoes, chainsaws, etc.)
  • Drywall
  • Flooring

Contact the Stearns County Veterans Service Office at (320) 656-6176 (St. Cloud) or (320) 256-1435 (Melrose) for more information.

Reimbursements also are available for veterans in Benton, Dakota, Faribault, Fillmore, Hennepin, Houston, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lac Qui Parle, Lyon, McLeod, Sherburne, Sibley, Swift, Todd, Wilkin and Wright counties.

Good luck,

Jeff
