May 15th deadline to pay property taxes stings Greater Minnesota homeowners, business owners and farmers

(ST. PAUL, MN) – State Representative Paul Marquart (DFL-Dilworth) issued the following statement on today’s deadline for property taxes to be paid for the first half of 2012.

“Today, Greater Minnesota business owners, farmers and homeowners unfairly bore the brunt of drastic statewide property tax hikes. Rural Minnesotans paid dearly for the Republican’s misguided decision to completely eliminate the Homestead Credit, a tax benefit that homeowners cherished and valued for over four decades. Getting rid of the direct relief provided by the Homestead Credit has hurt seniors on fixed incomes, families, farmers and small businesses.

Of the property tax increases due today, 64% come from Greater Minnesota. The impact of the increases means rural homeowners paid property taxes EIGHT times higher than metro homeowners and rural businesses paid THREE times higher than the metro area. Farmers were hit with increases of $54 million or 11%. The permanent elimination of the Homestead Credit led to $370 million in property tax increases in 2012. The state now has the highest property tax level in our 154-year history.

Today’s property tax payments are devastating to homeowners and small businesses whose income and financial situations have worsened during these tough economic times. The 44-year old Homestead Credit should never have been eliminated and it must be restored.
