HOLBERG STATEMENT ON LATEST MMB CONSOLIDATED FUND STATEMENT SHOWING LARGEST BUDGET INCREASE IN HISTORY

ST. PAUL – Minnesota Management & Budget (MMB) released their Consolidated Fund Statement for the end of the 2013 legislative session on Wednesday detailing the state’s spending over the next two years as passed by the Democratic Majority and signed by Governor Mark Dayton in May. As part of the document, state officials reported the 2014-2015 All Funds budget will include the largest budget increase in state history. With Democratic lawmakers in complete control of state government, Minnesota’s total spending will increase by more than $6 billion to a historic high of $67 billion. State Representative Mary Liz Holberg (R-Lakeville), Republican Lead on the House Ways & Means Committee, gave the following statement in response to the report.

“Two months after the legislative session adjourned, Governor Dayton and Democrat majorities revealed the true impact of their everyone-pays-more budget. The truth: Democrats quickly passed into law the largest spending increase in state history. In contrast, Republican policies over the last two years held the line on wasteful spending, focused on efficient, effective government and allowed Minnesota’s economy to recover. Governor Dayton, Speaker Thissen and House Democrats ignored positive economic indicators and reversed course to pass a shocking 10 percent increase in spending that hardworking taxpayers can’t afford.”

While MMB’s after-session budget report typically comes out within one month of the end of session, this year’s report was not released until a full two months had passed.
