NEWS STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF BONDING BILL

Today, the Omnibus Bonding bill (HF 1752) passed the Minnesota House of Representatives on a bipartisan vote of 99 to 32. The bill allocates $496 million in general obligation bonds for statewide infrastructure improvements. State Representative Alice Hausman, DFL Lead on the House Capital Investment Committee, issued the following statement:

“Today's bonding bill makes strategic statewide investments throughout Minnesota that will help create jobs both now and in the future. It is a big improvement to the inadequate version of the statewide bonding bill that passed the Ways and Means Committee and was sent to the House Floor. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to help improve the original proposal with a better bill that more adequately addresses infrastructure needs across the state and is more geographically balanced. However, I am disappointed that the Southwest Transit Corridor was not funded even with the strong backing of the business community in the metro area and the citizens in the western suburbs.

The bonding bill passed today makes an investment in higher education, transportation, housing, economic development, water and wastewater systems, and more closely honors priority lists of state agencies, MnSCU and U of M. Additionally, it fully funds important projects, like Austin’s Hormel Institute expansion, which is “shovel ready" and will create 120 permanent jobs.

House DFL members very much wanted a robust and strategic bonding bill this year. This bonding bill takes a big step forward in improving our infrastructure and in the process will create thousands of construction and permanent jobs vital to the state’s economic recovery.”
