Rep. Persell: Omnibus Tax Bill Exemplifies Irresponsible Budgeting

St. Paul, MN – Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the conference committee report on HF 2337, the Omnibus Tax bill. The bill cuts property taxes for corporations and businesses by freezing the Statewide Business Property Tax at 2012 levels, costing the state more than a billion over the next decade.

With the state already facing a $3.5 billion deficit next year, this bill would add an additional $145 million next budget cycle and over a $1 billion over the next decade. Furthermore, this bill would prioritize this tax cut for big business over paying back the $2 billion still owed to Minnesota schools.

With the elimination of the Market Value Homestead Credit last year by the Republican majority, property taxes for homeowners increased $71 million, yet this bill would only provide $4 million in relief. Ag-property taxes increased by 12%, this bill would provide no relief for farmers.

Regarding passage of HF 2337, State Representative John Persell issued the following statement:

“Ever since the Republican majority eliminated the Homestead Credit last year, I have heard from many homeowners and farmers that saw their property taxes sky rocket. Instead of cleaning up the mess they made of property taxes last year, Republicans have chosen to irresponsibly provide relief for corporations and big business, rather than provide some much needed relief for our middle class.

“We cannot continue down the road of furthering our state’s debt. Instead of raising taxes on our homeowners and farmers, we need a balanced approach to budgeting that responsibly prioritizes the backbone of our economy – our hard working, middle class."
