Bill to redefine marriage advancing

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Greetings,

It looks like the House majority will bring a bill to redefine marriage in Minnesota to the House floor for a vote Thursday.

This is in the works even though a recent Star Tribune survey shows only 38 percent of Minnesotans support redefining marriage. Only 19 percent of respondents outside the Twin Cities metro say we should allow same-sex marriage.

It will be interesting to see what plays out when the bill comes to the floor. Will Democrats who live beyond the metro go against their constituents and vote for same-sex marriage, or will they side with Republicans and vote to defend traditional marriage?

With fewer than two weeks left in session, we are not even close to having a new state budget in place. We should focus on issues that unite us by growing jobs and balancing the budget. The rejection of the proposed constitutional amendment last fall was not a mandate to redefine marriage.

I plan to vote to uphold traditional marriage.

Regards,

Joe
