Decker bill passes House, Senate

ST. PAUL – A bill to rename part of state Highway 23 to honor fallen Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker passed both the House and the Senate Thursday.

Sen. Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, and Rep. Jeff Howe, R-Rockville, introduced the legislation (SF 76/HF 146).

“This memorial will ensure we identify Decker’s legacy on 11 miles of highway he was assigned to patrol,” Howe said. “The goal is for this memorial to remind people of what is most important: people and relationships. That is Officer Decker's legacy and this memorial will ensure we remember his honor and sacrifice.”

“I am honored to have been asked to carry this legislation," F. This small memorial will serve to remind us all that Office Tom Decker protected and served his communities of Cold Spring and Richmond and in that service paid the ultimate sacrifice. He truly was a part of a special group that is dedicated to protect and serve.” Fischbach said.

The bill is now headed to Gov. Mark Dayton for his action. Pending his approval, the stretch of Highway 23 between Cold Spring and Richmond would be marked “Tom Decker Memorial Highway.”
