Rep. Moran: GOP Tax Bill Chooses Corporation Over Those on Fixed Incomes

St. Paul, MN – On a party line vote, the House Majority passed HF 2337, which would make dramatic cuts to the Renters’ Credit Program in order to provide tax relief for businesses and corporations like Wal-Mart.

Tax relief for corporations found in this bill is funded through a permanent annual cut to the Renters’ Credit of $70 million. As a result, nearly 300,000 Minnesotans will see a reduction or elimination of this refund. Of these 300,000 Minnesotans, approximately 87,000 are seniors or disabled renters living on fixed incomes and struggling to make ends meet.

Regarding passage of the bill, State Representative Rena Moran (DFL – St. Paul) offered the following remarks:

"It is simply unbelievable to me that Republicans would choose corporations like Wal-Mart over our seniors, our disabled, and those living on fixed incomes here in Minnesota.

"Here in Ramsey County, we have 44,000 renters receiving this credit and under the GOP Tax Bill, 99% of them would see a reduction or elimination of this credit. This will mean, on average, these renters will bear a $200 tax increase, just to give tax relief to big business.

"This is yet another example of Republican priorities that will have unfortunate and disastrous impacts for members of our community. Passing legislation like this is the wrong priority for Minnesota."
