News from Representative Uglem 05-13-2013

Monday, May 13, 2013
Dear Friends,

There's just one week to go here in Saint Paul. It's hard to believe, but the 2013 session is constitutionally required to come to an end on May 20th. Yet unfortunately as of today we still don't have a single final budget bill passed. The most important work we were sent here to do remains incomplete with time running out.

I firmly believe that Minnesotans deserve ample time to properly review and offer input on the final budget bills. With many of the most critical elements of the final budget deal being negotiated behind closed doors, it's important that the public have time to thoroughly examine the results of those agreements,  and offer their feedback to legislators and the Governor.

Unfortunately, I am concerned that with so little time left, the majority intends to push through their final budget without much time for legislators, let alone the public, to fully examine these bills. I don't think it's transparent or honest to be conducting business this way, and I think Minnesotans deserve better from government than for it to act like a student who waited until the night before to get their homework done.

I will keep you updated on the progress of the final budget bills once we receive them. With just seven days left, it's sure to be a hectic final few days of the 2013 session. As always, thank you for the continued privilege of representing you and our district in Saint Paul.

Have a great week,

Mark Uglem
State Representative, District 36A
