News from Representative Wills 05-10-2013

Friday, May 10, 2013

Dear Friends,

We have just ten days remaining here at the legislature to complete our work for the 2013 session. We are constitutionally required to adjourn on May 20th. If we don't complete our work and pass a budget by May 20th, we would be forced to go to special session.

We still have yet to see any of the final budget bills, or even the budget target agreements from the Governor and leaders in the House and Senate.

I will do my best to keep you informed on the final budget bills -- with one week left this Monday, it's sure to be an action-packed final week here in Saint Paul!

Legacy Bill on the Floor Today

After some delay, the Legacy bill comes to the floor for a vote today. This is the last bill on which I worked throughout session in the committee process, and I'm glad to see our work come to a conclusion today.

One of the proposals in the Legacy bill that I worked on secures $6.4 million in funding for 15 conservation, wildlife, and habitat projects in the Metro Area, including Dakota County. The proposal was originally a bill with strong bipartisan support with 33 co-authors that was included in the Legacy bill.

Omnibus Energy Bill Passes

On Wednesday the House passed the Omnibus Energy bill, which includes numerous mandates which would increase energy bills for almost all hardworking Minnesota homeowners and apartment residents.

The bill requires a 40-percent renewable energy standard by 2030 for investor-owned utility companies. This includes a 4-percent solar mandate, with a goal of 10-percent.

These mandates, while well-intentioned, ask companies to invest in more expensive and less reliable energy technologies that will drive up rates for homeowners. With other tax increases on the way, I could not support a bill that would result in low and middle-income Minnesotans paying more.
