Legislative Update from Rep. Andrea Kieffer

Friday, April 26, 2013

Hello Neighbors,

Reminder – Library Listening Session Tomorrow

I will be holding another Library Listening Session tomorrow, Saturday, April 27 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the R.H. Stafford Branch Library in Woodbury.

Omnibus Bills Move Forward

The House has passed several large omnibus bills over the last two weeks, including: Jobs and Housing Omnibus, Environment and Agriculture Omnibus, Public Safety and Judiciary Omnibus, State Government Finance & Veterans Affairs Omnibus, Health & Human Services Finance Omnibus, K-12 Education Omnibus, Higher Education Finance Omnibus and the Tax Omnibus Bills.

Tax Omnibus Bill

On Wednesday night, the House passed the 2013 Omnibus Tax Bill, which raises taxes by $2.6 billion on Minnesotans, or around $500 for every man, woman and child in the state. The taxes could come from higher income taxes, alcohol taxes, tobacco taxes, and some elimination of tax deductions for those that itemize.

I issued a statement to our local media on this bill, which you can read here:

“Today's Omnibus House Tax bill will raise $3 billion in new taxes and fees imposed on all income brackets. It should come as no surprise to anyone that I opposed this bill. The new rate on our highest earners will make us #2 in the nation, driving investment to border states, particularly Wisconsin. When I began my service in the state legislature, many of you supported my stance on fiscal responsibility and improving the business climate in our state. This tax plan does exactly the opposite, and there is no reason for it: the state's deficit is nearly gone, and our economic activity is picking up again. I voiced my concerns on January 24th saying the DFL budget 'increases taxes all over the place!' Based on the results from over 600 constituents who completed my survey, many agree with me. Thank you!”

The Woodbury Bulletin covered the bill in a story here.
