News from Representative Wills 03-15-2013

Friday, March 15, 2013

Dear Friends,

It was another busy week in Saint Paul as we approach the first committee deadline for legislation. In order to continue to move through the process, policy bills must have been heard in all policy committees in either the House or the Senate by the end of the day today. As a result, there's always a flurry of activity as the committee deadline approaches.

This week, two of the bills I'm working on received committee hearings. My bill that would allow the Minnesota Zoo to take in orphaned moose calves was heard in the Agriculture Policy Committee. This bill is designed to help the Minnesota Zoo work to solve why Minnesota's moose population has declined so drastically over the past several years. KSTP had a great story earlier this week on this bill that you can watch by clicking here.

My Veteran's Hiring Tax Credit legislation also was heard in both the House and Senate Taxes Committees on Thursday. I'm hopeful that it will be included and eventually passed as a part of the tax omnibus bill later on this session to help our veterans get jobs here in Minnesota.

Student Visits

I want to say a special thank you to Alexa & Cameron from Burnsville High School who came to the Capitol to learn more about my Vets Hiring Tax Credit bill, and to Marlee Berg who shadowed me as a part of the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America Program. You can learn more about this great program by visiting their website http://www.mnfccla.org/. It was great to meet these impressive teenagers and see their interest in the legislative process.

AmeriCorps Week

It was AmeriCorps week this week! As a member of the Commission on National and Community Service, I encourage you to find out how you can get involved and volunteer in your community by visiting http://www.serveminnesota.org/.

I also met this week with Len Price, the Executive Director of ConservationCorps, which is a branch of AmeriCorps. You can learn more about this organization, and get involved by visiting their website at http://conservationcorps.org/.
