Legislative Update from Rep. Andrea Kieffer

Friday, February 22, 2013

Hello Neighbors,

Here is what’s happening at the Capitol:

Tax Conformity

I supported bipartisan legislation last week that conforms Minnesota’s individual income tax and corporate franchise tax to most federal changes enacted since April 14, 2011 for the tax year 2012 only. Passing this legislation will prevent many Minnesotans from having to amend their tax returns in the future, and provides middle-class tax relief.

State Economy  Continues Improving

Minnesota’s state revenue collections continue to surpass projections with an additional $140 million more than expected going to the General Fund. The improvements the last legislature made during 2011-12 are working and continue to provide positive economic results. We will receive another full report next week.

Bills Moving Ahead

My bill to increase penalties for repeat sex offenders was heard in the House Public Safety Committee last Thursday. HF142 has bipartisan support, and I hope the Chair will reverse his decision to include it in an omnibus bill.

Save the Date!

Upcoming Town Hall: March 9th

I’ll be co-hosting a Town Hall meeting with U.S. Congresswoman Betty McCollum and State Senator Susan Kent on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Woodbury City Hall (8301 Valley Creek Rd).
