Legislative Update (February 8, 2013)

Friday, February 8, 2013

Dear neighbor,

On Wednesday, Governor Dayton gave his State of the State address before a joint session of the state legislature. The governor started his speech by highlighting many of the good things which have transpired over the last two years, but had little else to offer other than tax increases and more spending to make government grow bigger for the next two years. I was surprised that the governor took credit for the improvements Republican-led policies brought to Minnesota the last two years, but at the same time said he wants to reverse the progress we’ve made with 72,000 new jobs and a $2.5 billion budget surplus. The governor asked if we were better off than we were two years ago. My answer is yes.

This week, the House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee held three days of hearings on gun control legislation. I was amazed to see citizens from across the state take time out of their busy lives to come show their support for the Second Amendment in St. Paul. Please know that I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and will not be voting to restrict your right to own a firearm. After spending three days of hearings on gun control legislation, I would like to know when the DFL majority will have hearings on creating jobs and addressing the budget. That should be our top priority.

I’m also hearing that a bill to legalize gay marriage may be introduced next week. Please know that I support the traditional definition of marriage as one man and one woman and will not be supporting any legislation that would change that.
