Rep. Bob Barrett responds to federal ban on synthetic drugs
Barrett is author of Minnesota’s stricter enforcement of these deadly drugs
St. Paul – State Rep. Bob Barrett (R-Lindstrom) this week responded to the federal government’s sweeping ban on synthetic drugs. Barrett is the author of bipartisan law that implements stricter enforcement of these deadly drugs, formerly legal substances that led to the death of a Minnesota teenager last year.
“President Obama and Congress did the right thing in addressing the growing use and production of synthetic drugs across the country,” Rep. Barrett stated. “In conjunction with the legislation we passed earlier this year, we can arm parents with the information necessary to recognize and respond to these terribly destructive drugs.”
Barrett’s bill, Chapter 240, House File 2508, builds upon progress made in the past legislative session by expanding the definition of illicit ‘synthetic’ substances and granting the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy expedited rulemaking authority to handle the ever-changing chemical formulae used by drug producers. The new law also increases the penalty for the sale of synthetic cannabinoids from a gross misdemeanor to a felony, punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, a $10,000 fine, or both.
“I was proud to work with a broad public safety coalition on this legislation in Minnesota. We sent a strong message to drug producers and sellers that their destructive behavior will not be tolerated, and our children’s lives will not lie in their hands,” Rep. Barrett said.
The legislation was endorsed by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, League of Minnesota Cities, Minnesota Board of Health, Minnesota County Attorneys Association, and local law enforcement agencies.
