Rep. Erin Murphy released the following statement about the damaging cuts to child protection services included in the conference committee report for HF 130. The bill cuts $27 million from Children and Community Services that are primarily used for child protection for abused children.
“Republican leaders promised Minnesotans they would balance the budget without harming kids, seniors, or disabled Minnesotans and without tax increases. They have $5 billion left to go and they have already broken both promises.
Child protection grants are used to protect the most vulnerable of the vulnerable – young children in harm’s way. Without this funding, counties must either raise property taxes or reduce their efforts to protect children. A cut of this size would likely require both.
Minnesotans deserve a real debate and realistic solutions to our challenges. That’s the best way to reach a balanced budget that invests in our future while preserving key services – like child protection – that clearly demand our attention as Minnesotans."
