LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Kiel

Late last week Governor Dayton vetoed a very important tax bill. Lawmakers had been working on this legislation for months, and it included some important provisions, especially for Greater Minnesota. One of those provisions I authored is in regards to residents living in Marshall County.

This provision in the Tax Omnibus bill would allow Marshall county residents who were displaced by the flood in 2009 to continue listing their farms as a residential homestead even if they aren’t living on that property and are within 50 miles and still living in the state.

Unfortunately the governor vetoed this bill last week. It is my hope that the governor will rethink this issue. There are many positive provisions in the tax bill that would provide tax relief to property owners and would provide an Internship Grant Program for companies in Greater Minnesota as well as increasing the Angel Investment Credit.

I would urge you and your families and neighbors to contact the governor’s office regarding the tax bill, and tell Governor Dayton to come to the table to negotiate a new tax bill. You can call his office at 651-201-3400 or toll free at 800-657-3717.

On Monday the House passed a bonding bill which I voted in favor of. There were also many good provisions in the bill regarding flood mitigation for our area, as well as funding to improve roads and bridges in Greater Minnesota.

We also passed the Vikings stadium bill late Monday night on a vote of 73-58. The bill is being heard in the Senate today. It must pass the Senate to continue moving through the process. If it does pass then a conference committee of Senators and Representatives will be formed, and a final bill must be then re-passed in the House and Senate again before arriving at the governor’s desk. This bill has a few places to go yet, before we can say that it is a done deal.

I will keep you updated as the bill continues through the Legislature.

Deb
