HORTMAN INTRODUCES BILL TO FIX COON RAPIDS DAM

ST. PAUL, MN – State Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL – Brooklyn Park) introduced legislation last week to fund the repairs of the Coon Rapids Dam.
Rep. Hortman’s bill requests $16 million for the installation of a gate at the Coon Rapids Dam designed to prevent the northern migration of Asian Carp. It is expected this project could create as many as 200 local jobs.
“The Coon Rapids Dam serves an important ecological purpose in preventing the invasive species of Asian Carp from spreading to watersheds above the Dam, including the Mille Lacs watershed and the valuable walleye fishing industry in that area," said Hortman. “These repairs are also vitally important to protecting recreation sites and private property along the Mississippi River.”
Rep. Hortman was successful in securing funding for this project in last year’s bonding bill, only to have it vetoed by Governor Pawlenty.
“I have renewed optimism that this project can at last move forward under the leadership of our new Governor,” said Hortman. “This project is ready to go and meets our benchmark of creating jobs and protecting important state infrastructure.
I will work closely with Governor Dayton to have this project included in his proposed list of bonding projects.”
Rep. Hortman can be reached by phone at (651) 296-4280 or by email at rep.melissa.hortman@house.mn
