LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Swedzinski


I wanted to inform you that Avera in Marshall is partnering with Open Door Health Center to help provide the community with access to medical and dental services. A program called Open Door Mobile Clinic will provide the community with medical and dental services on certain days of the week. Open Door Health Center offers a variety of comprehensive medical and dental services and can provide these services to anyone, there are no restrictions based on locale, age, gender, ethnicity, language, economics or citizenship.

I’d also like to share the 2012 survey results with you, much thanks to everyone who participated.

1. Do you support public funding to build a new Vikings stadium?
A. Yes: 42.1%
b. No: 57.9%

2. What would be the best way to fund a new stadium for the Vikings?
A. Electronic pull tabs: 23.7%
b. Racino: 24.3%
c. Block E Casino: 19.8%
d. Legacy Amendment funds: 5.6%
e. “Fan” tax applied specifically to goods and services purchased by football fans: 49.7%
f. No public money should be used: 39.5%

3. The latest state budget forecast calls for a state surplus of $876 million for the 2012-2013 biennium, which is obligated to replenish our budget reserve. If further surpluses ensue, how should that money be used?
A. Put the money in savings to help insulate our state against future downturns and unstable national and global economies: 54.5%
b. Reduce taxes so taxpayers keep more of their money in the future: 39.2%
c. Increase government spending: 6.3%

4. What is the best way to begin to repay the education shift?
A. Reduce spending in order to grow the surplus: 77.8%
b. Increase taxes: 22.2%

5. Where is the greatest need for tax reform in Minnesota?
A. Income taxes: 48.5%
b. Property taxes: 62.3%
c. Sales tax: 8.4%

6. Should the governor and the legislature raise taxes/fees to fund important priorities and programs in the state that have suffered cuts in recent years?
A. Yes: 29.5%
b. No: 70.5%

7. Should the governor and the Legislature work to provide greater property tax relief to homeowners and businesses?
A. Yes: 84.2%
b. No: 15.8%

8. Should the governor and the Legislature hold the line on/reduce spending and keep flat/cut taxes to help grow the economy?
A. Yes: 83.3%
b. No: 16.7%

9. Should Minnesota focus on its transportation spending on a new light rail or on new roads and bridges?
A. Light rail: 5.7%
b. Roads and bridges: 94.3%

10. Should a “right to work” provision be added to Minnesota’s Constitution? (That is, workers who do not choose to join a union would not have to pay “fair share” dues.)
a. Yes: 71.9%
b. No: 28.1%

11. How should health care be handled in Minnesota?
A. Go along with the federal program (Affordable Care Act – ACA): 17%
b. Reject ACA completely: 46.8%
c. Create our own, Minnesota-specific insurance exchange in compliance with ACA: 36.3%
