LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Minnesota is a health care leader

To the Editor:

Minnesota is nationally recognized as a leader in health care and human services delivery. I am proud to say that the Legislature recently moved to build on our nation-leading programs and create an even more patient-centered, cost-efficient heath system—which, after all, is a recognized and consensus goal.

This year we built a base of support for recipients and providers of state programs. We enhanced Medical Assistance for Employed People with Disabilities, allowing people over the age of 65 to keep their jobs, assets, and integrity. We provided more funding and resources for those who face homelessness or are diagnosed with autism, and we’ve localized emergency services to maximize under-utilized resources in under-serviced areas.

As legislators, we recognize that we are stewards of taxpayer dollars. For that reason, we have forged relationships with stakeholders, advocates, and the Health Department in order to promote further accountability and efficiency for our state programs. Following our legislation’s implementation, an externally-performed cost-benefit analysis will help us understand the strengths and shortcomings of the health and human services system. EBT and welfare reforms will ensure that the people who need assistance are receiving it, and residential group homes will have a better map for success with new policy standards.

In the human services realm, Minnesota is one of the most generous states in the country. We can be proud of this kind of work.

Sincerely,

Kathy Lohmer
State Rep. District 56A
