HOUSE BRIEFS

March 9th Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you to all who stopped by the booth at the Milaca Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo at Milaca High School on Saturday. There was an excellent turnout and I had a great time! I look forward to seeing many of you at Princeton High School tomorrow (Saturday, March 10) from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the Princeton Area Chamber’s Business Expo.

This week my “Innovation Delivery of Education Services and Sharing of District Resources” bill passed out of K-12 Education Finance and was referred to Ways and Means (the last committee stop before the House Floor).

This five-year project would allow school districts to form partnerships to share resources as well as innovative ideas with the purpose to raise student achievement. This is a “students-first” measure that would give our students access to programs and equipment that might not otherwise be available to them.

Also in K-12 Finance, a bill passed to Taxes that would pay back all of last year’s K-12 education shift and start payments on the debt left on schools by previous legislatures.

With this bill (HF2083), we would pay back all of the $430 million additional education shift passed as part of the budget agreement with Governor Dayton last year. We would also make the first ever repayment of the $2 billion education shift from previous years.

As you may have read, Governor Dayton vetoed the "Castle Doctrine” Bill (HF1467) earlier this week. This bill would have allowed citizens to protect themselves and their families when faced with an apparent home invasion or kidnapping attempt without having to fear legal recourse. With this veto, the burden of proof remains on the homeowner to prove deadly force was necessary when defending their home.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to share your thoughts on the legislative session.

Sondra
