HOUSE BRIEFS

January 20th Legislative Update

Dear Neighbors,

Sunday is the annual March for Life at the capitol. The program begins at 2:30 p.m. after families have marched from the cathedral to the front steps of the capitol. If you plan to attend, please join me afterward for refreshments in the Capitol Café located in the basement of the capitol. The temperature predictions sound good with a bit of snow, so dress accordingly.

Thank you to the small business owners who attended the Chamber luncheon with me and Senator Brown in Princeton on Monday. I believe that it was a success and appreciated the opportunity to hear some of your concerns and suggestions.

Many of you have seen an increase in property taxes this year, but I want you to know that I plan to do everything I can to provide property tax relief through the upcoming legislative session. First, I will offer a proposal that will repeal the recently passed market value homestead credit tax exclusion, which I think caused some of the increases in commercial and industrial.

In addition I support a proposal authored by the House Taxes Committee Chair, Representative Greg Davids, a bill called The Statewide Business Property Tax phase-out, which Gov. Dayton vetoed last year. This bill will assist our businesses and blunt the impact for homeowners when local governments are unable to control spending. Furthermore, it will improve Minnesota’s job climate.

In addition, I continue to encourage cities and counties in my district to tighten their belts to keep from passing the buck on to the taxpayers. Our goal should be to reduce government spending so that we can deliver relief that is necessary to create jobs and get businesses to expand in Minnesota.
Watch for my weekly updates starting next week when session begins in earnest.

Sondra
