State Representative Paul Rosenthal joined Edina and Bloomington residents in applauding the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) $ 1.3 billion list of road construction projects slated for 2010 that includes a plan to convert Highway 169 at Interstate 494 to improve traffic flow and ease congestions.
“Those of us who travel this section of road know the fix is long overdue," said Rep. Rosenthal. “After years of accidents, frustrating delays and a lack of funds to improve traffic flow, it’s great news that things will finally start to improve.”
Among the 283 projects 217 are state highway construction projects including the Highway 169/Interstate 494 interchange and bridge and pavement replacement on a section of I-35 in Duluth. The other 66 projects improve safety at railroad crossings, repair seawalls and docks in three ports, make improvements on runways and terminals at regional airports, and remodel or construct new transit facilities.
The projects are made possible as a result of an historic transportation bill passed by the Legislature in 2008. In making the announcements, Governor Pawlenty cited the importance of a strong transportation system to Minnesota’s economy, something with which Rosenthal agrees, stressing the importance to local economies as well.
“Minnesotans depend on a safe, reliable transportation system as a cornerstone to a strong and vibrant economy,” Rep. Rosenthal said. “All of these projects will help battle congestion, improve safety, and foster economic growth within our communities.”
Rosenthal continued, “This is one of the times that the orange construction cones will be a welcome sight, and a signal of easier commuting days in the very near future.”
