ST. PAUL - A panel of five state judges has released its redistricting plan for the Minnesota Legislature, which was necessary due to population changes from the 2010 census. State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) says the current District 24B, which he represents, is about to undergo significant changes.
"The redistricting plan has cut a substantial portion from my current area of representation,” Cornish said. “It=s sad to lose many of the constituents I’ve met over the years, and I’ll miss many of the dinners, benefits and parades in this area, but it will also be exciting to learn about the issues and concerns facing the residents in my new district."
The Legislature and Governor were unable to work out a redistricting agreement, so a panel of judges was assigned to create a plan. The Minnesota Constitution requires redistricting every decade after each census.
Cornish’s new House district – 23B - will now include St. James and Madelia in Watonwan County, as well as Elysian and Waterville in Le Sueur County. District 23B will also include all of the communities in Blue Earth and Waseca counties that he is currently representing.
Lost from the new District 23B will be Faribault County and the following communities: Delavan, Easton, Wells, Kiester, Bricelyn, Frost, Walters, and Minnesota Lake.
Both Representative Cornish and Representative Paul Torkelson (R-Nelson Township) currently reside in the new District 23B.
“I will continue to represent the needs of my constituents in my current district, but I also look forward to getting acquainted with residents in my new district,” Cornish said.
