ST. PAUL – State Representative Bob Gunther (R-Fairmont) said the Minnesota House has taken a big step towards improving Minnesota’s job climate by submitting a bill that will streamiline Minnesota’s cumbersome business permitting process.
“Permitting has caused many jobs to leave Minnesota, and has delayed many more from being created,” Gunther said. “It’s time Minnesota embraces those who want to expand their businesses or relocate here as opposed to making it as difficult for them as possible.”
Under the proposal, businesses permits would have to be approved within 150 days by the MPCA and DNR, or else the agencies would be forced to address why they are delaying the process. Gunther, who chairs the Minnesota House Jobs and Economic Development Finance Committee, said he’s heard horror stories from potential business owners who’ve waited for more than a year to receive a permit.
“The current permitting process is a barrier to job growth and economic prosperity,” Gunther said. “More than 1,700 jobs are currently being held up in this state due to permitting. The sooner we can change this process and put these folks to work, the better off our economy will be.”
