ST. PAUL, MN – On Thursday, November 1, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced its decision to issue numerous permits for the PolyMet copper-nickel mine in Northeastern Minnesota. The permits include the permit to mine (which includes the financial assurance plan), dam safety permits, a public waters work permit and an endangered species takings permit. Rep. Sandy Layman, R-Cohasset, who has been a strong advocate for the project from its inception 14 years ago, issued the following statement about the decision.
“Thursday’s decision to grant copper-nickel mining permits in northeastern Minnesota is a big win for our community, the Iron Range, and the state as a whole,” said Rep. Layman. “This decision had been a long time coming, and this mine will create countless good-paying jobs and provide a significant economic boost to our area. I remain committed to developing our state’s natural resources in an environmentally-sound way, and look forward to the bright future that projects like this represent for Minnesota.”
