ST. PAUL – Rep. Bud Nornes, R-Fergus Falls, issued the following statement regarding news that two schools in the Perham-Dent district are receiving a combined $415,000 in school safety grant funding.

Perham Senior High School is receiving $235,000 and another $180,000 is going to Heart of the Lakes Elementary. Last session, the Legislature approved and Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law $25 million in capital investment funds that schools could apply for to make physical safety improvements. The Minnesota Department of Education formally announced the grant allocations in a news release.

“It was a main focus of ours in the House to provide resources for improving structural security at our schools throughout the state and I am pleased we included funding for that purpose in this year’s bonding bill,” Nornes said. “Congratulations to the people who were successful in assembling successful grant applications. School safety remains a top priority of mine and I look forward to continuing these efforts to make sure our children are safe at school.”

The Legislature approved an additional $25 million in school safety grants as part of the supplemental budget bill, but those funds were vetoed.
