Legislative Update (July 20, 2018)

Friday, July 20, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

Capitol News

Because of federal REAL ID legislation, Minnesota is working on creating ID cards that can be used to board domestic flights after the October 2020 deadline. Just this week, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) unveiled new designs for our IDs, including a horizontal format for drivers under 21 years old. You can see the designs below from DPS.

These new licenses will start being issued on August 6, with the REAL ID-compliant options becoming available October 1, 2018. I’m hopeful that this will be a smooth process for everyone who wishes to obtain a REAL ID to do so before the October 2020 deadline.

The legislative session is finished, but both the Data Practices Commission and Child Support Taskforce will be meeting throughout the summer. There’s lots of work to be done in both of these areas, and I look forward to our upcoming meetings.

Final Update of Summer

Because we are now 60 days after the legislative session, state law says I can no longer send out legislative email updates after today until early November. However, I can still respond to individual constituent emails, calls, and letters. If you need assistance, please contact my office; I’d love to hear from you.

As I look back at the last two years, I’m proud of what we accomplished. We passed significant middle class tax relief, invested in roads and bridges, and increased funding for schools around the state. I’m proud to have authored and passed legislation to get funding for the at-grade rail crossing on Hanson Boulevard in Coon Rapids, and to clean up the Andover hazardous waste pit. We’ve worked for three years to secure these funds for the hazardous waste pit, and it’s great to see this become law to keep our residents safer.
