Update from the House (incl. info on email black-out period)

Thursday, July 19, 2018

Dear Neighbor,

We have had more rain than we need in our area. The governor has included Aitkin County in a recent state emergency declaration which included 36 Minnesota counties. Here are links to information dealing with the emergency declaration.

  • The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency has disaster recovery resources for homeowners, renters, business owners, local officials at this link.
  • The Department of Commerce has information that will help guide homeowners who have experienced flood damage here.
  • The Department of Commerce also provides a detailed disaster information packet.
  • The Minnesota Rural Finance Authority offers a zero-percent Disaster Loan Program to help farmers with flood clean up, repairs, and replacement costs not covered by insurance. This link as all the details.

We recently received more positive news regarding our state’s economy. The latest Minnesota Management & Budget report indicates that, through June 30, the state took in $348 million (1.6 percent) more in 2018 than previously forecast in the last full economic assessment back in February. General Fund revenues are now projected to grow by 4.7 percent above that was collected in FY 2017.

The tax relief enacted at both the state and federal levels is helping. In Minnesota, we enacted $650 million in reductions for 2018-19 and $790 million for 2020-21. We were able to fully fund state government and send surplus tax dollars back into the pockets of our seniors, young families, college students and small businesses.

The fiscally responsible actions we took in the 90th Legislature continue to pay off. I see a bright future ahead for Aitkin and Crow Wing counties, as well as the entire state of Minnesota. However, more work remains to ensure we continue the positive economic results.

Regrettably, due to State Campaign Finance rules, I am not allowed to provide any further weekly legislative email updates until after the November election.

Please be assured I will continue to work hard on your behalf. Through news releases to the local newspapers, which are also posted on my official website. I will continue to provide important legislative information as it occurs, so please check my website.
