RELEASE: Rep. Zerwas Statement on Veto of Public Safety Legislation

Saturday, May 19, 2018

SAINT PAUL, MN – On Saturday, Governor Mark Dayton announced a veto of a bill authored by Rep. Nick Zerwas, R-Elk River, to increase penalties for those convicted of blocking access to a highway, an airport, or public transit. The legislation, HF390, passed with bipartisan support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, including support from the Senate Minority Leader.

“It’s extremely disappointing to see the governor flip-flop on this issue; from stating that shutting down highways put ‘public safety at serious risk,’ to now vetoing a bill that received bipartisan support in the legislature,” said Zerwas. “It’s yet another example of Dayton bending to the will of fringe activists rather than listening to every day Minnesotans. Once again, the governor has failed to support Minnesota's law enforcement community, putting them at serious risk. I’m disappointed in the veto, but will keep working to protect law-abiding citizens and police officers in our state.”
